Day One | A Journey Into Heart of Taos’ Living Heritage

Begin your adventure with a scenic journey along the historic High Road to Taos, arriving at the Tiwa village of the Red Willow people, Taos Pueblo. Immerse yourself in the living history of Taos Pueblo, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where you'll bake traditional horno bread under the guidance of Taos Pueblo tribal member Geronimo Romero. Gain insight into the art and heritage of horno baking, savor a
traditional Puebloan lunch, and explore the historic adobe structures that have been continuously inhabited for over 1,000 years.

Next, venture to the Rio Grande del Norte National Monument for a breathtaking horseback ride through the piñon and sagebrush-studded Taos Plateau. Take in the vast volcanic landscapes and connect deeply with the serene beauty of the high desert.

Arriving at your Glamping Basecamp, you'll be welcomed with refreshing drinks, luxurious accommodations, and an optional sunset yoga session to ground yourself in this wild, remote sanctuary. As night falls, indulge in a multi-course gourmet dinner paired with fine New Mexican wines, surrounded by the fragrance of sagebrush and the tranquility of nature.

End the evening under a blanket of stars with a guided stargazing session led by Dr. Danielle Adams. What is Glamping?

Glamping is one of our deepest passions because it combines remote outdoor experiences, with luxurious camping facilities, so you do not have to forsake pleasure and comfort while experiencing our great, but hard to reach, outdoor locations. It’s a way to experience the untamed and completely unique parts of the world, like in the Rio Grande Gorge and Valley, without having to sacrifice creature comforts. You can enjoy a fusion of glamour and camping, glamping, while authentically experiencing the most awe-inspiring night sky of the Taos Plateau in a comfortable canvas tent, with non-camplike amenities, such as foam pad bedding, bedside table and canvas chairs. Glamping in luxury while doing sunset yoga, eating farm to table fresh meals, and connecting within and without – it can’t get much better than that!

All activities are designed to meet you at your level, either expert of beginner. For our Stand-Up Paddle Boarding experience, we join expert guides who will offer you a safe, adventurous and informative opportunity to quickly adapt to your board and paddle.

Your Expedition

Our Taos Perseids Meteor Shower Expedition is an extended 5-night journey designed to create lasting memories. Witness one of nature’s most spectacular shows—the Perseids Meteor Shower—during a once-a-year occasion in the high desert skies of Taos, New Mexico.

A Celestial Event

At night, you’ll be astounded by a sky lit by the glowing Milky Way and the annual Perseid Meteor Shower among thousands of resplendent stars perched within the Rio Grande del Norte National Monument. Far from the light pollution of city skies, you’ll have the opportunity to reconnect to the rhythms and motions of the starry vault as we ponder the ancient astronomy of ancestral Puebloans. Led by a knowledgeable and enthusiastic cultural astronomer, you’ll go on a laser-guided tour of ancient Arabian skies, enriched with the cultural backstories of star names that we still use today and supplemented by telescopic views of planets, star clusters and distant galaxies.

What is Cultural Astronomy?

Cultural astronomy is the study of how societies relate to celestial objects and their appearance in the sky. Drawing from astronomy, social science and the humanities, cultural astronomers don’t study the physical properties of the stars themselves, but rather the ways that people draw constellations among the stars and tell stories about them. Cultural astronomy that focuses on ancient built structures is called archaeoastronomy.

Inspired Executive Chef
JOSH WILLETTE

Josh grew up in Taos but traveled around the West as he developed his culinary career. In Napa, Josh ran a catering company called Smoke Open Fire Catering. The premise of the company was to cook in front of the guests, using only local meats and vegetables, on an open fire and in a rustic outdoor setting. These dinners were often held at wineries and served as extravagant wine paired meals. “I got to work very closely with not only the wineries, but with the growers and farmers in the area, to create experiences that combined a rustic feel with the elevated quality of fine dining. The experience is similar to what we create with the glamping excursions at H.I.,” Josh explains.

Inspired Cultural Astronomer
DANIELLE ADAMS

Dr. Danielle Adams is a cultural astronomer who studies the development and transformations of indigenous Arabian astronomy, as revealed in Arabic poetry, historical literature and modern-day star names. She is active in informal astronomy education, speaking to various groups about Arabian cultural astronomy and the heritage of the many Arabic star names that astronomers still use today, and she uses the inspiration of pristine desert skies to advocate for the modern-day preservation of dark skies. Danielle is an Organizing Member of the International Astronomical Union’s Commission C5 on Cultural Astronomy (IAU C5) and a member of IAU’s Working Group on Star Names (WGSN). She lives in Flagstaff, Arizona, the world’s first International Dark-Sky City, where she serves as the interim executive director for the Flagstaff Dark Skies Coalition.

Inspired Cultural Astronomer
KARI MALEN

Kari wants to help clear your mind of can’t and inspire you to find your best self both on and off the mat. A Yoga and Fitness Instructor based in Taos, NM, Kari was led to yoga as a compliment to athletic endeavours in her youth and her teaching began as a process of answering other people’s inquiries about a practice she found more from than just a good stretch. In an effort to advise, Kari sought deeper training in yoga and yoga philosophy and that opened the door to so much more. Further studies led to a focus on body specific care such as: Hip Bliss, Shoulder Recovery, Myofascial Release, and Yoga and the Aging Body. Kari challenges her students to develop strength and resilience through awareness and to get stale energy moving through and out of the body with classes such as Yoga for Stressed Bodies, Fundamentals for all Level yogis, Cardio Yoga Sculpt, Vinyasa Flow, Mindful Morning, Restore & Relax and more.

Kari particularly likes to work with yoga nay-sayers to show them how the practice can keep us doing the things that we love.
