Indigenous Storyline of New Mexico
A Sacred Journey Through Puebloan Heritage
This Indigenous Storyline journey provides a unique opportunity to connect with New Mexico’s past and present. We suggest you rent a vehicle to journey through each of these tours and regions with autonomy.
Follow a guided journey through centuries of Puebloan history, culture, and enduring presence across New Mexico. This thoughtfully designed itinerary from Friday to Monday invites you to explore the ancestral narrative with our expert guides.
Begin at Acoma Pueblo, living descendants of Chaco Canyon, and stand in the presence of one of the oldest continuously inhabited communities in North America. On Saturday, delve into the origin period of the Ancestral Puebloans at Chaco Culture National Historical Park (850–1150 A.D.), followed by an afternoon exploring the cliff dwellings of Bandelier National Monument (1150–1550 A.D.). Conclude your journey on Monday with a guided visit to Taos Pueblo, a UNESCO World Heritage site where multi-storied adobe homes and spiritual traditions remain vibrantly alive.
This immersive itinerary offers more than a tour—it’s a sacred storyline brought to life, offering guests an unparalleled lens into the land, people, and spirit of New Mexico’s Indigenous heritage.

This journey weaves together the stories of the Puebloan peoples from ancient times to the present. Our Indigenous Storyline is a carefully curated experience that spans three of New Mexico's most important cultural and historical regions: Acoma Pueblo, Chaco Canyon, and Bandelier National Monument, culminating in a visit to the historic town of Taos and the iconic Taos Pueblo.
Your adventure begins in Acoma Pueblo on a Friday, where you’ll meet your expert guide, Turtle, who will take you on a scenic interpretive journey through Sky City, the ancient home of the Acoma people. With local knowledge and a deep connection to the land, Turtle will regale you with stories that paint a vivid picture of the Acoma people's history, traditions, and the challenges they've faced. The spectacular views of the surrounding desert and mesas are just the beginning; Turtle’s storytelling will deepen your connection to this sacred place.
Following Acoma, on Saturday you journey on our tour north to Chaco Canyon, one of the most significant cultural and archaeological sites in the Southwest. Here, you’ll step back in time as you explore the ancient ruins and learn about the Puebloans’ extraordinary achievements in architecture, astronomy, and trade. The vast, open landscape and the remnants of this once-thriving civilization will leave you in awe, as you gain a deeper understanding of the Pueblo peoples’ sophisticated culture.
Next, (on Sunday) head to Bandelier National Monument, where dynamic geological forces have shaped the land and tell the story of migration and settlement by the Ancestral Puebloans. Your guide will lead you on a hike through two areas of this expansive monument, sharing insights into the lives of the people who once inhabited what is known as the Pajarito Plateau. Along the way, enjoy a gourmet picnic lunch showcasing the best of local flavors and tranquil setting along Frijoles creek.
To peak your exploratory timeline, we highly recommend booking a truly special experience to complete your trip: the Taos Pueblo Horno Baking Class on Monday. The horno ovens—domed adobe structures often seen in the backyards of New Mexican pueblos—are a key part of Puebloan culture, used to bake bread, cookies, and prepare stews. At Taos Pueblo, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, you’ll have the opportunity to participate in this time-honored tradition by learning how to bake bread in a traditional adobe horno.
Under the expert guidance of Geronimo Romero, a Taos Pueblo tribal member, you’ll gain insights into the cultural and scientific significance of the horno, and learn the generations-old skills passed down by his mother, Crucita Romero. You’ll mix your own dough, bake your loaf, and discover how the horno plays an important role in cultural events, from feast days to community gatherings.
