Cast of Light

This morning was one of the most magnificent crimson red sunrises out our window, without effort the sky took on an emotive form as I watched in the silence of dawn. Walking outside seeing the crescent moon and Venus painted over by dramatic painted clouds glowing with the intoxication of color had me in such awe. I thought about the consistency of our stunning sunrises and sunsets, those ethereal episodes of bold hues, the transformation of color as the sun ascends or descends unto the horizon and the natural awakening of inspiration and creativity traveling within me as the light cast dances across the Sangre de Cristo Mountain Range or the horizontal of the Taos Mesa.

Often times I talk about this spiritual light with others that is hard to articulate in enough words to give rise to the feeling. With charisma and passion quivering in my voice I attempt expressing how magical and powerful the light of Taos can not only invigorate, but it can captivate the soul and force the artist out of you.

Whether it’s writing in a journal, or taking photographs capturing different angles and depth of perception in your lens, hiking on a trail inside the gut of the gorge or deep inside the forest, or dusting off paints or colored pencils, this light makes us want to express and harness the experience. In the morning victory of the sun’s climb up over the shape of a “V” in the mountains, I often take my dog along the Rim Trail that provides an exceptional view of the Rio Grande Rift and the rise of mountains up out of the flat mesa unearthing the fields of sagebrush to it’s finest hour illuminated by the sunlight birthing another day with opportunity to explore her wonder.

On your next visit to Taos, if you can wake before dawn, grab a hot cup of coffee, your camera, your journal, your loved one and rise for a journey out towards the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge. Walk out along the trail only a few 100 feet to find a slab of basalt that is an ideal perch to witness this magical encounter. My mom always said to us as kids, “The best things in life that will forever imprint upon your soul, are free.” Our mothers are rich with truth! Whether the timing of your trip allows for this experience at sunrise or at sunset make it an intention to flourish in the miraculous light of northern New Mexico!
