One of the most iconic parts about Taos is our Rio Grande Del Norte National Monument. Exploring and hiking down into the womb of the Rio Grande Valley offers a truly dynamic experience with this region. In the American Southwest, so many of our rivers don’t allow us the fortune of a truly Wild & Scenic river due to dams. Up here in the northern part of New Mexico we are blessed to have the Rio Grande free flow, preserved by the monument status that is managed by the Bureau of Land Management.

On this 2.5 miles round trip hiking tour we explore the heart of this geological Rift Zone on one of our favorite trails highlighted with breathtaking views of what is known as the Box Canyon. Join us on the trail in this 2.8 to 4.8 million year old basalt adorned with juniper, piñon, sagebrush and cane cholla and learn about the geological forces that etched this land. Enjoy a pack lunch perched listening to the sound of the rivers current in this timeless setting.

Following our hike we will enjoy a local wine tasting and paired perfectly to enrich our picnic lunch to top off our adventurous excursion!

If you want to experience a local side of Taos that will connect you to the landscape, the heritage and the geology then join us for an unforgettable hiking adventure of the Rio Grande!
